Gene Hoyt, Crossland Game Calls Team Member, went on
a Bow hunting trip to Kansas recently with Team Members David and Brandon
Fortenberry. On November the 8th Gene was hunting a funnel and
had a big buck come by in pursuit of a doe, but was unable to get a shot.
The deer was probably in the 150’s Gene states, "but I just couldn’t get
him in the right position for a shot, so I had to watch him walk off. I
thought for sure that my chance was over for the day, then I remembered
that a lot of times there will be more than one buck on a does trail
especially during peak rut, and especially in the Midwest. I stayed
patient, never setting my bow down and a few minutes later I heard
grunting and looked up to see this 130 class 9 Point coming down the same
trail. I was able to get a quartering away shot and he only went 30 yards
or so and piled up. Hunting the Midwest during the rut is a magical time
and hunters need to discipline themselves to stay in the stand and be
patient all day and there’s a good chance a nice buck will present an
opportunity."
